Is it safe to eat mashed potatoes that were left out overnight (no milk or butter in them)?

Or should I throw them out

  • Flies can carry the Shigella bacteria, which is most commonly transferred to food from feces on human hands and flies. It is better safe than sorry to throw the potatoes away. Potatoes are a TCS (temperature controlled for safety) food. Botulism is also another risk. I personally would never risk it. Potatoes are quite cheap. Reheated mashed potatoes never taste as good anyway.
