I like the hilarious train of thought you are on but it’s probably a bit more self explanatory given they knew what breasts/teats were and that it was good for the calf. Earlier livestock didn’t overproduce as much so it was more them sharing with the calf to help get more calories in. Given people often kept livestock indoors you could see how a starving person might try to feed their baby with it, then try it themselves at some point to avoid starving to death.

Starving is a powerful motivator to start taste testing things :p

So let me say. There were 3 people , baby, mom and the father. Mom was breastfeeding the baby. Father was sitting and watching and wondering "hmm , those nipples look quite similar to cow's milk ducts". He goes to the farm , gets under a cow and pulls that thing". Milk falls , cow kicks in anger and milk is discovered. Father learn's his lesson - you pinch a unknown women's nipple your bound to get slapped, you pinch a cow's nipple without properly comforting the cow your bound to get kicked.
