Why would I smell freshly cooked food when it’s almost 11 pm?

My parents don’t cook at night except to defrost foods that need thawing for cooking later. Sometimes they microwave nuts at night but this smells more like a meal than like a nut.

As a smell can trigger a memory so can a memory trigger a smell. It's been shown that by triggering parts of the brain during brain surgery people suddenly start smelling different things.
It's possible something like that happened naturally in your brain due to tiredness triggering a smell hallucination.

Maybe you can be dreaming. Also maybe your neighbors is cooking something. Something could had been cooked and they didn't tell you but you smell it.
