Now things are getting financially difficult for a lot of people I wonder if we'll see gruel make a return.
Do you like gruel?

My family makes polenta rather often. Served with mushrooms, garlic, onion, rosemary, rabbit, and merlot sauce with parmesan grated over it. My family made if often, particularly during the Napoleonic wars.
I've never had gruel, but surprisingly we all grew up here with a lot of meals that were considered poverty food. Mac and cheese, hamburger gravy, cinnamon sugar toast, beans and rice, and the ever popular college student broke food - Ramen Noodles.
Gruel describes a wide spectrum of dishes, from milk rice with apple sauce to pea soup with bacon. I'm sure I don't like most variations of gruel but I like surely some.
Well it is bland but it does get the chore of eating out of the way with a minimum amount of fuss.

When my wife used to make oatmeal I used to call it gruel. The kids thought it was funny, she was not amused.
Hmmm , I dont know but it sounds seriously HORRID , no thanks.
No. My stocks of emergency food are far better than that.
I've read about it in novels but never had it. I do love grool, though. :-)
Now you've mentioned it Poppy, there's ever reason why it might well return.
Never had gruel. I've had watered down oatmeal, which isn't very tasty.
That is what we called the stuff mom made when we were kids.
I dunno. Sounds horrid. I likes my oatmeal thick. Ready brek is the best
Oatmeal and Cream of Wheat only.
