If you're vegan and go to a non vegans house, do you suck it up and eat what is provided or do you expect them to cater to you?

If I let them know ahead of time, and they don't tell me they can't make anything that fits, then I would think that's rude to just expect me to eat it anyway. I'd just eat whatever is vegan out of what's available. If that's nothing at all then I'd drink water. But if they start getting upset or pressuring me to eat it, I would get testy and probably not eat at their place again. Not because of the food because of the disrespect.

I understand forgetfulness, but when you treat shit like this like they're just being snobby or picky when they won't break their rules for you, that's irritating. I'm not even vegan but I've been on strict diets before, and I don't know how people don't get that it's a real thing. They're not children saying ew because it doesn't taste good, they're adults who made a real commitment to a specific lifestyle. Why the fuck would they break their rules just because you don't care about them?

one of my best friends has been a vegan for her entire life, same as her family and their households... and in general, as a guest, I never ever expect for the hosts to personally cater to me or my needs, and this is not the case either

and since it's been their life style for over 50 year or something... their cooking is just amazing and quite varied, so I've never ever "had an issue" with it

after all, I am not "anti-veggies" and I do not require to have animal produce every single meal either, so is just not a big deal to me at all

Few things are unclear, are they inviting you specifically to eat? Do they know you're a vegan already? If yes and yes, then they should probably at least give you some kind of option without making a vegan meal for everyone. I'm a vegetarian, but I wouldn't expect someone to randomly know that if I hadn't told them before and I can usually work around it, but I don't like people making a fuss about it on my behalf.

Fortunately we have no vegans within our circle of friends, however if we did, I would ask them very politely if they would be prepared to either help me, or perhaps prepare their own meals.

I'm not vegan, but my daughter is, and anyone who would expect you to eat something you don't want is a bad host. If they don't know that you're vegan (or don't eat shellfish, or pork, for example), it's not unreasonable to prepare that, but reasonable accommodations can be made, even if it's that they just get the veggies, and some cheese (for the non-vegans).

We have a really nice pizza place near us who are quite happy to make a vegetarian pizza without cheese or bell peppers (not a vegan thing, just a personal preference), and pour on a load of garlic sauce instead.

This is easy to answer. I just sort of turn the question around, and then the answer applies both ways:

Of course not. I'd choke down whatever nonsense they prepared for everyone else. Of course I can't rule out a sarcastic, "So where's the real food?" at some point, because I'm me.

Now if I know ahead of time a vegan is coming to a dinner I'm making for multiple people? I'd probably make sure that a few of the sides are vegan so they can make a meal out of the sides, because I know the person. However I'm not making a completely separate meal if a guest reveals that they're vegan at dinner time. Either way, if they don't want to mix and match sides? They can eat the napkins. 100% vegan. Or dial up DoorDash. I'm not a damn restaurant.

Personally I have never been a proponent of stuffing something in my body just to be so “sociable” — whether it’s food alcohol drugs medicine body parts etc I see this as a rather inappropriate & invasive expectation. I've been a vegetarian for 30 years I let my host know long before I accept an invitation and if they don't have anything I will just eat whatever I can (usually a salad or bread) and ignore the rest. Im not preachy about it but I am solid in my choices.

If they’re my friends I expect them to provide at least some vegetables or fruit or something… they know I’m a vegetarian and it would make no sense for them to invite me with nothing for me to eat. I went to a friends baby shower (she didn’t know I was a vegetarian) and all they had was sushi and sandwhiches. I didn’t make a big deal out of it. I drank some water and that was it.

I'm vegan and never have had a issue with this. Mostly cause I'm never going to a friend's house specifically to eat. Sometimes go over for drinks but most alcohol is vegan so that's not a issue either.
