Humans have an especially sweet tooth because of our enormous, energy-hungry brains. Especially during development.
Plus most snacks are mimicking some original common food. Though I don't know if anything chocolate mimicks.
But fruity candy like Skittles and starburst are generally mimicking fruit and berries which also come with tons of vitamins.
Salty, crispy snacks like chips and Cheetos are generally mimicking insects, especially cooked insects like mealworms and crickets.
Sodas mimic things like fruit juices.
But yeah, our uniquely sweet tooth comes from our big brains.
We also have a unique taste for sour, fermented, and spicy things that many/most mammals either can't taste or are repelled by.00 Reply

Sugar and sweets existed for a long time in non manufactured forms.
There are many ways sugar addiction works. The biggest reason people eat sweet junk is because their parents raise them this way, even at school i had to tell teachers I'm not eating that junkfood. Replace it with real food that gives you limitless energy and you'll realize that the sugar "high" actually sucks.31 Reply369 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic. We get a hit of dopamine as I understand it. Fats do similar. A Mac Donald's happy meal does make me happier when I am down.
Sugar has been in our diets forever. Ripe fruits, sweet peas, honey = sugars.
Once upon a time, food was seasonal and local produce. New potatoes were available in new potatoe season. Sweet oranges and apples in their season. We used to look forward to foods coming into season.
Industrial agriculture changed all that with sugar cane leading the way. All of a sudden we could have as much sugar we want all year around. We took to it like ducks to water.00 ReplySugar always existed, it's one of the foundations of multicellular life. The reason you like it so much is that it's pure energy, and energy is everything from an evolutionary perspective (besides reproduction), and therefore it's all your body cares about. Evolution just didn't get the chance to adjust to the fact that we can manufacture it out of the ass now, so you still crave it like your life depends on it.
20 ReplyI think because our body recognises sugar as a big source of energy, sweets are considered by centuries a delicacy because of their particular flavour. Also refined foods have a lot of studies for the correct combination of sweetness and softness to obtain the maximum pleasure (it also exists for salty foods). So our body releases some hormones like serotonin or some others (I ask pardon to all scientists, I’m not an expert) that causes the perception of pleasure.

I used to be so addicted to chocolate. Once my mom sent me 5 lbs of fudge. It arrived on Friday. I called to talk to her on Monday. She asked how everyone liked the fudge... silence. then she asked "did you share any of the fudge?"
No.
"So you ate all 5 lbs of fudge in 3 days?"
Yup.31 Reply- 448 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic.
+1 yUm... no, sugar exists naturally in plants, and animals require glucose to function/not die, so they have to eat plants, or eat other animals that eat plants.
We don't manufacture sugar, we harvest it, usually from sugarcane plants, citrus fruits, and a few herbs. You like sugar because its the body's natural way to have energy, low blood sugar is VERY dangerous, but then so is high blood sugar.10 Reply 963 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic. Sugar has existed before we existed. It is the only thing our brains burn. Sugar isn't manufactured it is refined; refining is the process of removing impurities. It is often from the sugar cane plant. Photosynthesis is the process of taking water and CO2 and converting it into oxygen and sugar utilizing the energy of sunlight. Your DNA is 1/3 sugar. As mammals we nurse our young on sugar water that is created by mammary glands. Plant cells have an extra organelle that other organisms don't have it is a cell wall, just outside the cell membrane, it is made up entirely of sugar. So everytime you eat a fruit or vegetable you're eating a bunch of sugar. Sugar is life.
00 Reply525 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine so the answer is pretty easy to solve.

Lmao that's the funniest argument I've ever heard in my life. Guess you also need to look up Guy addicted to water. It's literally a thing. There is also psychogenic polydipsia which is a disorder that's all about uncontrollably drinking water. Sounds like one may need find it helpful to study and learn about such topics before they say the most dumbest shit I've ever heard. Cannot be addicted to something necessary to life just seriously what? I can't stop from laughing.
- +1 y
What you are talking about is obsessive compulsive behavior. Not a true addiction to the substances. I can go my entire life and never use cocaine and be fine. I can't go a week without water nor a month without sugar. Also the study that they used to "prove" it is more addictive was with rats. By adding both substances to a water feeder. All that proves is that rats prefer sugar water to cocaine water.
- +1 y
@shortster Your lack of understanding really shows here lol. Bringing up it been used on rats somehow don't prove anything yet that's how we have to test things on animals because on humans it would unethical. And all humans are are animals with the same compulsions. And somehow you think people can only be addicted to things that we don't need and is only limited to certain group of people who overuse things we need to live. That's not how it works at all.
- +1 y
@shortster WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING HERE
- +1 y
Actually they do test things on people including their addictive properties. As a toxicologist I often read these studies as part of my job. Not all drugs effect animals the same way they effect humans and studies on rodents are useful; but often don't translate. Animal studies on chimpanzees have the highest translation rate and even that is not 100%. Plus I was critizing more the methodology of the study; than the test subjects used.
- +1 y
@shortster Yes they test somethings on humans when they can and their are some differences but it often implies commonality. Rats are a very good subject though and used Widley for a reason.
- +1 y
@shortster guys dtop that
- +1 y
@shortster stoppppp
- +1 y
@shortster Then you've just missed the whole point of the question and my answer so well done. But if you ever want to look into why people over eat stuff with sugar in... I'll give you hint it's to do with sugar been addictive oh what a surprise. And love sweets, pop and the rest oh what a shocker. lol.
- +1 y
@shortster hahah i just don't like getting notificationns i guess i will mute it until u stop lol
- +1 y
@shortster Ah but now your talking about sugar that's not overused. Which is whole other subject to sweets lmao. The sugar amount in a apple is not comparable.
- +1 y
I think it would help if you look into why people get unhealthy. By eating sugary things and drinking as such which supresses the fact of them feeling full which leads to overeating it's very telling of how sugar put into things is very unhealthy compared to just a simple apple. And how that becomes very easily addictive and leads to many problems. There is a reason why a doctor recommends an apple not a lollipop.
That's all addictive patterns and addiction. Meanwhile if your eating healthy you won't get a urge to be addicted to such things. But there is a reason why when one eats on pringle they don't stop there. Compared to a apple. - +1 y
Sorry @marianna546 for annoying with notifications, I won't even mention salt because well that's gonna start a whole other thing that I would love to aruge with this guy about but also cannot be bothered either lol. I am done now so if he replies it won't get a respond.
Interesting how he argued with me yet many others here also pointed out it's addictive. But it was fun while it lasted did make me laugh.
Again I am sorry though. I am one to always defend my opinion quite a bit. - +1 y
The average apple has 25g of sugar; a Milky Way has 21g. The apple is healthier than the Milky Way because it has a bunch of vitamins and minerals and the Milky Way doesn't. I think that it is telling that when you talk about sugars from fruits it is healthy; but from sweets they are addicting. Yet the glucose you find in a lollipop is the same glucose you find in an apple. Since they got that glucose by pulling it out of another plant. People are unhealthy because life is about finding balance. And the FDA decided that fat was bad for us and so food companies responded by reducing the fat content of their food. However, since that ruined how the food tastes they added more sugar to make up for it. Throwing the natural balance of fat and sugar in our diets out of balance. Instead of addressing the primary problem of unhealthy diets of the time, overeating. If we continue down the road of sugar = bad, like we did with fat. Food companies will cut out sugars and jack up fats and in twenty years people will be talking about how fat is an addictive substance and we're all unhealthy because of it. Because it is so much easier to blame a molecule than our own self control. Or an overbearing government that incentives companies to mess with the natural dietary balance of our foods. Though with the current geopolitics, it is likely a moot point as we will all be starving from food shortages. As Russia and Ukraine account for 40% of the world's wheat supply; on top of the fertilizer shortage. And the US decision to burn more food as fuel for cars; instead of drilling for oil.
- +1 y
Dammit have to make final words. Moderation does not make something not addictive, you can also drink alcohol in moderation but that does not mean alcohol ain't addictive. You can do the same with smoking just because someone smokes a for a couple days don't mean they will be addicted to it. Yet still is addictive. So that's that really.
Really is the last I am saying on it though 100%. - +1 y
I didn't see the other people who were saying that. I was only passively scrolling through the replies when I saw yours. If you want me to argue my point with them I can do that later. As I have to go to work soon. As for salts, sodium, potassium, calcium, and chlorine are all essential for proper neurological function. When one neuron releases its neurotransmitters; the neuron next to it reacts by a cascading release of one of these four salt ions.

You could also find a sweetener that you like the taste/aftertaste of the most, but some say sweeteners can be also bad for you.
For example i like the Hermesetas brand of sweeteners the most, i think it's based on Saccharin, Sucralose and Cyclamate. - +1 y

@OneManOnly01 Then stop acting like a child. If she was talking about processed sugar then she should have specified that. Anyway processed sugar has been around since the early 1800s
