Why do fat people say "I really don't eat that much"?

Some don't, I had a friend who ate three to four times as much as me, lazy asf and never gained weight... the rest of our group of friends had to be very careful what we ate or we put it on... yet one girl only ate half as much as the rest of us and still put on weight, even though we all lived together.

Genetics play a part, so does metabolism, but overall you are right... especially when someone is like 400+ pounds, I get a little over but to get that much over they really had to go nuts I think.

Actually that’s not always the case. I hardly used to eat in high school and just things I drank accumulated to a fuck load of calories that I never thought about. My eating portions were never an issue nor was it what I ate. I’ve always been a clean eater but then yeah things I’d drink were so high in calories that I picked up weight.
Lost weight after just sticking to water, tea and kombucha. Meals and food I kept the exact same as I did before.

If their metabolism is severely damaged by too much crash dieting they may be overweight even when consuming under 1000 calories. There can be a lot of factors at play.

But, I see where you’re coming from. You’re talking about the usual principle of calories in vs calories out. If someone knows their TDEE, then they’ll know to simply eat less than that to lose weight or eat the same as that to maintain their weight. If they eat more than their TDEE, then they’ll gain weight.

Some peoples’ basal metabolic rate can get damaged though, if they partake in too steep of a caloric deficit for too long. Their metabolism gradually will adapt to their new caloric intake. Also, if their crash diet doesn’t contain adequate protein and they don’t have adequate resistance training for their muscles, up to 25% of the weight they lose may be muscle. Then, if their diet is unsustainable and they return to their old ways, they can gain all their weight back, and even faster—now that their metabolism is slower than before.

If that happens, they’ll end up back at the same weight with a slower metabolism and less muscle mass. If they keep repeating this vicious cycle, they can really mess up their metabolism to the point where they really can be overweight even when consuming less than the average caloric intake.

so we know if you starve your self lose weight to the point where you die and you can eat 5000 calories a day to the point where you can die.. so we have to extremes on the opposite side of the spectrum.. so with two opposites there has to be a mid point at where you don't lose or gain weight its the right amount.. the problem is most people are above this mid point line and this is the cause of it all the weight.. NOT medical problems , genetics, metabolism or what ever bullshit excuse anyone can come up with simple as that

Yes, what you described is called the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). That’s the mid point you’re talking about.
