The top one are chips, batatas fritas, fries, or French fries. The bottom would be a bag of crisps, chips, aka potato chips.

I live in USA, but I have no issue with identifying these carb + fat by whatever name people are using in the moment. It is typical of American restaurants to call the top photo "fries" unless they are pair with a battered fish fillet, at which point they are almost always listed as "chips". No one in the USA eats "fish and fries".

In the US chips are B... potato chips, that are called crisps in some other countries like the UK. In the US, if you get fish and chips, you'll get A, which are more often called fries. So, it turns out that both A and B are "chips" in the US.

Yes, Britishers introduced India so we use British English. However Indian English is there too, pronunciation is in Hindi accent in Indian English. Grammar is same.

In the US, some restaurants sell "Fish And Chips," which is fried fish and fried potatoes; otherwise, chips refers to the very thin fried potato wafers in the bag.

The image that you have for chips are those horrible coated thing called 'fries', Proper Chips are at least 1/4" square and as long as the potato but can be cut thicker at your preference, and the best are twice fried, in a deep fryer.

Chips are what them Yankees call (French) fries, and what them Yankees call chips are really called crisps. Kiwis call the former hot chips and the latter cold chips. In my opinion, sweet potato or aubergine chips taste better than potato chips. Aubergine chips don’t need ketchup.

A question for out British members. If you buy a bag of (lets say) Lays potato chips in the UK, is the bag marked crisps? I'm just wondering if there is specific export packaging.

I have lived in the UK, so when I visit there, I call French Fries “chips”. Here at home in the United States, what the British call “crisps” chips.
