Why do they call it canning when glass jars are used?

Why do they call it CANNING when the food is put into GLASS MASON JARS?

Hmmm, good question. There are so many things that we say that don't really make sense. You can't really "can" them like you find them in the supermarket... so I can see why that's not correct.
