Does anyone remember the ice cream man?

Anyone remember when ice cream trucks plied the neighborhoods each summer, driving through and selling ice cream and other frozen confections? What was your favorite treat? Mine was the Sidewalk Sundae. We had one but they disappeared after Covid. I still remember the tune they used to play - Pop Goes the Weasel.

I sure do. I haven't lived in places that had ice cream trucks for years, but when I was a kid a truck used to drive down the street every day, at least in the summer.

I probably became aware of it in 1957 or 8 when I was old enough to go outside and play with the neighborhood kids. I left the area in the early 80s.

I'll have to ask my sister if an ice cream truck still comes by. She still lives in the neighborhood.

A Helm's Bakery truck used to drive down the street every day, too. That truck had a distinctive whistle. I got to pick out a doughnut almost every day. The ice cream truck was for special treats.

Our driver's name was Rolly. He didn't drive one of those food wagon trucks. It was more of a pickup truck with a freezer box built onto the back. Dry ice kept the box cold. It was the Good Humor company

The music from the truck sounded like a music box, playing the same short melody over and over. I could hear it from blocks away. I can still hear it.

There's a company in our nearby town that makes its own ice cream. They have their own shop, but they also have carts and set up booths at all the fairground events. It's great ice cream. They have some really good flavors. At outdoor events, one of my favorites is an Irish Cream popsicle with milk chocolate shell.

We still have them where I live. When I was a kid I was never allowed to buy anything off those trucks. I think I did it once in my life.

We also had a milk man and an egg man. We had a milk box and the milk man would leave two half gallon bottles of milk and take the old bottles to reuse.

The egg man was a farmer who filled his station wagon with eggs and came to our door once a week to sell them. They were 50 cents a dozen. A couple of years ago eggs were 50 cents a dozen. After inflation that means the eggs were 1/10 the cost they were when I was a kid.

That's a cool picture of the melted truck! They got rid of ice cream trucks after the scene in Orange is the New Black that showed Aleida as a child having sex with the ice cream truck guy. That probably scared many parents and the trucks lost business

They don't drive around the streets anymore, they just park up all day near beaches. It's not unusual to see half a dozen parked in a row.

I grew up poor, so they never used to come around my way in the ghetto. But I know in the rich neighborhoods up the street, it was a regular thing in the 90s and I'd see all the trucks around there.

Yes , I remember, growing up in Anchorage it was the taste freeze trucks , I swear they had the best soft ice cream , and you got a huge cone piled with ice cream. For 40 cents. Mmmm thanks for the memory haven't gone there in awhile

There is still an ice cream truck that comes through the neighborhood. Where I work they had the ice cream truck come to the parking lot and we had free ice cream at lunch.
