What comes to your mind when you think about American food?

Most foods Americans love are from different countries. Like the hamburger and hot dog are all German inventions while Pizza and spaghetti are from Italy.

Spaghetti is from China; it didn't exist in Italy before Marco Polo. Pizza is from... well, wheat is from the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East, tomatoes are from Mexico, and water buffalo (from whose milk proper mozzarella is made) are from India. So that didn't exist in Italy before Columbus.

This is an old lie invented in the United States in 1922 by pasta makers in NYC. Chinese noodles and spaghetti have nothing to do with each other, the former are obtained by stretching the latter by pressing.

The first written document to mention pasta was attributed to Apicius. In "De re coquinaria libri", in fact, the filling of a "lagana" is described.
A century before Christ, Cicero and Horace declared themselves "delighted" by "lagana", a flatbread made of flour cooked in water and without yeast. After a 1000 year old hole and in 1154 the Arab geographer Edrisi mentioned "a food made of flour in the form of threads", the "triyah" prepared in Trabia (present-day Palermo). From Sicily the pasta prepared in this way was then exported to the continent. Again according to the Arab geographer, already in the mid-1100s in Sicily and in particular in the Trabia area, "so much pasta" was produced that it was exported "to all parts, to Calabria and to other Muslim and Christian countries and a lot of it was sent shiploads." It is no coincidence that today, Palermo itself is known for Tria vermicelli.

In the year 1279 when the notary Ugolino Scarpa, listing what the soldier Ponzio Bastone bequeathed, mentions among other things "bariscella una plena de macaronis" (a certain full of macaroni). Even earlier, in 1244, a doctor from Bergamo promised a wool worker from Genoa that he would cure him of a mouth ailment if he ate neither meat, nor fruit, nor cabbage, nor pasta: "... et non debes comedare aliquo frutamine neque de carne bovina nec de sicca neque de pasta lissa nec de caulis..." (Roberto S. Lopez "Up and down the history of Genoa"). Marco Polo returns to Venice in 1292! The comparison of these three dates alone clarifies any remaining doubts: pasta was not a Chinese invention, Italians already knew it before the hero of Il Milione returned from his adventurous journey.

Nice to see someone who knows the origin of the hamburger, the first thing that comes to mind when i think of American food is too much sweet and sugar and over the top. But most American food is making changes to other countries food like the ones you mention. And i do love pizzas and burgers.

definitely the hamburger and hot dogs and shi. Also me eating some of that delicious food but my stomach burns it away like ice cubes on a sizzling pan.

I live in Germany, and I definitely see hamburgers (except for the name, lol) as an American food :P

Oh, my bad, misread the question…. I’d say I’m in the same boat, I think of hamburgers and hot dogs and pizza, but those aren’t really ours.

If I was going to go with something definitively American, I guess I’d go with BBQ. To the best of my knowledge, we can lay claim to that.
