What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten?

I've eaten a rabbit in Malta, spiders in Cambodia, Jadoh in India, Lindung in Indonesia and Grasshopers in Thailand.

Kind of hard to say. What people consider unusual is normal cuisine for others. For instance, people talk about squirrel and rabbit like they're either exotic meats or last resort verge of starvation survival food. But I grew up on it, just like my dad, his parents, and their parents did.

Sunday afternoons I watch Beverly Hillbilly reruns with my parents when I go over for Sunday dinner. A lot of the humor revolved around "hillbilly cuisine," characters reacting to Granny's invitation to go to the kitchen for some grits and hog jowls, like it was an unthinkable meal to "civilized" America. And I often hear those jokes while holding a plate of grits and hog jowls.

But to me the most unusual thing I've eaten, as in I wouldn't have even tried them if I didn't mistake them for another kind of meat at a family reunion, is mountain oysters. Fried (deep fried in this case) bull testes. But that's only weird to me. All of the small towns around here have annual festivals in the fall. The apple festival, the turkey festival, the creatively named fall festival (or Fallfest), cow days, and one town has the testicle festival. Their main focus is mountain oysters.
