A friend recently told me how she horrified some Americans who were staying with her witnessed her eating raw cake mix. Apparently it's just not done in the states because of the raw egg in it but in the UK people regularly lick the spoon or give the left over mix in the bowl to their kids to eat as the cake bakes.
It is risky to do, but plenty of people in America do it.
I used to make cakes from a mix in a box and it warned not to do it. But I did it all the time, couldn't resist. Fortunately I never got sick. But it is potentially dangerous no matter what country you are in.
It's not just the eggs, it is also the raw flower. It can contain dangerous bacteria.
"When you’re baking cookies or making a cake, do you or your kids lick the bowl or spoon? If so, the Food and Drug Administration wants you to know that eating or handling raw dough or batter can lead to illness.
Disease-causing bacteria can lurk in the flour used to make dough or batter, the FDA warns. “Flour is derived from a grain that comes directly from the field and typically is not treated to kill bacteria,” Leslie Smoot, a senior advisor in the agency’s Office of Food Safety and a specialist in the microbiological safety of processed foods, said.
Salmonella and E. coli are among the bacteria that can be found in raw dough. Symptoms of E. coli include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and – in severe cases – kidney failure.
The FDA recommends the following:
*Never eat raw dough, cake mix or batter. *If using packaged mixes, follow the label directions for cooking temperature and time for products that contain flour. For pre-packaged dough, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for keeping the dough cold until it’s baked. *Wash hands, surfaces and utensils after they touch flour and raw dough products. *Separate raw food from other food to avoid contamination. Know that flour can easily be spread because it’s powdery. *Don’t let kids play with raw dough, and avoid making cookie dough ice cream. Instead, buy ice cream made by manufacturers and look for treated flour and pasteurized eggs in the ingredients."
Interesting. In the UK hens are vaccinated against salmonella and both birds and eggs tested for salmonella. It's why we don't bleach our chicken or refrigerate our eggs. Bacteria levels in flour are also monitored and the risk considered very low.

Let me disabuse you if the notion that it isn’t done in the US. Some Americans don’t bc the health community tells us not to, but that hasn’t seemed to stop most of us lol Around my house it’s hard to make a cake bc not only am I licking the spoon or beaters , but by the time I’m ready to pour the batter into the pan, the whole family is gathered around the bowl, each with their own spoon!

I don't have leftover cake mix. I put it all in the cake pans. As for the eggs, I will pose a question to you. Have you ever eaten a balut? I have. A real delicacy in many places.
Raw egg is simply disgusting. Actually, to me, however, eggs are prepared is absolutely disgusting. I hate eggs! If I don’t know, they’re in there. (such as cookies, ice cream, etc.) I will eat the food. But if someone goes out of their way to tell me, there’s eggs in it, I just pass on it.
Having never made a cake, I never tasted its raw mix, but pancake mix, self prepared with eggs, when I was young and still now sometimes, I did taste and eat a few spoons. At first to check the the balance between a little salt and the sugar, then because it's nice to lick the spoon :0)
I almost never eat cake. But if you hand me a beater, spoon or spatula that was used to mix the ingredients, i’ll lick it until it orgasms cake batter directly onto my tongue… every… single… time. I was raised on that sh*t!
I definitely enjoy a sip of cake every now and then. I'll eat raw cookie dough also. Probably not surprising, but I also like my steaks rare. I'm probably part vampire.
Oh MIX, I thought you meant powder. Yeah, my mom used to let me lick the spoon when I was little and I would eat raw cookie dough too. I probably wouldn't do that now
