Why can't handmade food be cheaper?

I've always wanted to make more handmade food but it's so impossible with how expensive it is to just make a nice meal.

What pushes the cost up is all the little ingredients you often need. Unless you've got a well stocked spice cupboard buying them in just so you can use a pinch of cloves really pushes the price up.

I normally do a separate shop once a month purely to restock on stock cupboard essentials like flour, buying in bulk where feasible.

Fast food and restaurant food has become so ubiquitous that homemade food can't keep up like in the olden days. Plus back then everyone had their own gardens and animals for food. And nowadays all the best food goes to Japan and other imperial countries first before the U. S. gets it.
