  @Booboolove69 - I never fully discovered her ''secret''. As far as I could 'research' she did it the way other people ''officially'' make it as well.
  What I recall: she seldom used ready made stuff. Everything came from the basic ingredients.
  As an example - once a year in late summer we had half a swine from the slaughterhouse and all kinds of sausages, brawn, and other stuff was made.
  She had a very solid upper middle class upbringing for housekeeping the (very) early 20th century way. And loosing the war made her versatile in being creative with resources.
  One other detail: she had contempt for imported goods, unless they were ''colonial goods''

  Nah, Dongie :D... Bavaria is known fur other things. In fact, Bavaria -in German history - had been (and still is?) a separate story. They have had their own kingdom... and culture, somehow. ''We'' are actually a practical arrangement (formed in the 1880's) of several convenient cultures with the same language roots. But similar to the differences between -say - Ohio and Missouri... the 'culture' is not identical, but rather... only similar. /// where Thuringia (and such) have their own ''colour''.

  My sir name originates from either Bavaria or Switzerland. I guess my great × 4 grandfather came to America in 1799. The jerks made him slightly change, Americanize the name.

  ''Strudel'' translates to swirl. A name change does not change the taste... so why not?
  As you mention it: ''Americanizing'' the product itself is a more reckless idea.
  Think of pizza, beer, football, ''freedom'', and such :D
