Trending & News Canned green/yellow beans aren't my favorite because they taste awful. I like fresh or frozen ones.
My default receipt for green beans.
- cooking in water with 2 Tbl sugar, 2 tl salt
- pouring slightly 'al dente' beans over a sieve, frozen beans need usually less cooking time than fresh ones
- dissolving 50-70g butter in a skillet
- roasting 2-3 Tbl breadcrumbs bright gold brown in this butter on slow heat
- adding a pinch salt or 1/4 bullion cube
- adding beans and roasting together with breadcrumbs 5 minutes (to prevent overcooking breadcrumbs shouldn't be too dark roasted before and beans should be slightly al dente)
Other options is to cook beans and making home made Hollandaise sauce like for asparagus and other blanched veggies.
Third option I make sometimes if I have fresh tomatoes from my garden
- cooking beans
- roasting smoked bacon or ham in olive oil together with finely chopped onions and garlic
- adding blended tomatoes and cooking it 10-15 minutes
- adding spices, fresh basil, oregano, salt, shot Tabasco sauce
- adding cooked beans
- cooking 5-10 minutes to get beans soft as desired
I think a lot of us were raised eating canned vegetables. Corn and green beans were a staple.
The way you fix them would taste better than the way my mom heated them up and put butter and salt on them.
My favorite green bean dish is green bean casserole.
@sage2021 We never had canned vegetables at our house. Sometimes my mom used frozen corn or peas or mixed veggies, especially in casseroles or soups. Otherwise, it was always fresh. I remember the first time I tasted canned green beans. I liked them, but it was kind of like a Taco Bell taco, just not the real thing. And frozen green beans? I won't touch them bc the texture is totally ruined. Fresh green beans are so yummy. And I am with you on green been casserole... Yum!!
There's a stew here in South Africa that is called a Green Bean Bredie. Takes hours to cook, personally I like to use beef shin or mutton with rosemary or mint, potatoes (or sweet potato) and Green Beans in equal weight. I use red wine in the stock and cook it a minimum of 3 hours.
It tastes best if you let it stand for 15-24 hours. Serve it with rice and grated beetroot.
I waterbath can what I don't use first day. Pressure canning is too much hassle. Quart jars, filled to an inch of the top and boiled for roughly 3 hours in the cans. Shelf stable for at least a couple of years.
I prefer regular beans... especially, ranch beans... and baked
actually frijoles charros might be the very best... yeah
Yum!!
@Caroline91 I know you probably had them before
even make them yourself
@NathanDavis. Yes, but please, no chicharrรณn added!!
@Caroline91 I just had the best chicharrones ever, today... why not?
Green beans hold a special place in many kitchens due to their versatility and vibrant taste. Cooking them with bacon, onion, and vinegar adds a savory and tangy twist, creating an irresistible combination. This reminds me of a culinary journey through the American South, where flavors like these often find their way into soul-soothing dishes. Whether blanched in salads or cooked in casseroles, green beans consistently deliver delightful surprises. 🫘โจ
Not bad, sautรฉed with garlic and oil, or just raw (washed) back from the farm market.

I do. I just like them with the butter and then maybe pepper, nothing fancy.
I love them too. I like to fry them. Just pour a little oil in the pan, drain the liquid from the beans and dump then i the skillet. Season them with whatever you and sautee on med heat for about 10-15 mins stirring frequently... yum!!
Hate those shits, mostly the ones they gave at school, id just break them open to mess with the little green beans inside lol
i agree!! but my school cooks them plain and those aren't too good :)

I like them but fresh or at least frozen. I like them in eggs and onions but I grew with that. Your way sounds good too.
I love vegetables, in general. Just not canned. I love fresh green beans. Also green peas and avocados @NathanDavis
that's alright... we all have your not so good things... lmao
@NathanDavis Yeah, I concede... finally. But I am with you on the regular beans, especially frijoles charros. And I. would add frijoles de la olla and refritos. I have some kind of beans almost every day. One of our favorite meals is quesadillas y frijoles. Simple and so delicious.
