1 yGood liquor is a social lubricant, just as good wine and beer are. Getting drunk means regrets and headaches. And if you're regularly getting drunk, you have a drinking problem.
New rules are 3 to 6 drinks of alcohol of any kind per week. That means 4 -6 oz servings of wine, a can of beer, 12 ounces, or a single shot (1.5 ounces) in a mixed drink (which includes no OTHER alcohol in it.)
A good drink should TASTE good and be pleasurable to consume. Drinking to get drunk means only the GOAL of drinking is important, not the means. It's the means that's important in imbibing alcohol. Just as eating a good meal means enjoying all the flavors and tastes on the way to finishing the meal. Not stuffing your face.
It's the journey, not the destination.19 Reply- 1 y
@exitseven Well, you were drinking too much! Only time I ever drank more than that was early college. After a few hangovers, stopped that.
Nowadays, might have a drink with meals or friends. Belong to a supper club. We usually have a specialty drink and some wine with our meal. Other than that, drinking is rare for me. I have two or three drinks per month, tops. - 1 y
@Screenwriter By today's standards I would probably be sent to rehab. Back in the day I did not drink any more than any of my friends. If you went out on Friday night after ten o clock you had an expectation that every car you encountered was driven by somebody in some state of drunkenness. I go to an island in the summertime. It has a coastal road around the island and the unwritten rule was that on Saturday night everyone drove around the island in a clockwise direction so there were no head on collisions.

@exitseven OH MY GOD!!! That is scary... I'm trying to keep my liver healthy. And, Exit, I just stopped drinking as much as in college because I had a full-time job and could NOT afford to have a hangover.
There was some heavy drinking with journalist co-workers every Tuesday night at Molly's at the Market near Cafe du Monde in the Quarter with The Times Picayune crew after work-- 1 or 1 am to dawn. But, again, I needed to get up in the morning to see my spouse off to work in the morning and to start my day before noon, despite the fact that I went to work for 3 pm and got off around midnight.
You can't get anything done if you live at night. And some of those folk did that. Went home by 4 am slept till noon, started off for work by 2. Wash and repeat. I usually went home after work, got to bed by 2, got up by 7, saw my guy off, got out by 8 am or so, and washed clothes, ran errands etc BEFORE work.
Heavy drinking precludes getting much done. The older I've gotten the less I CAN drink. High on my garden, my friends, my grown son, home repair, good exercise. Too much to do! Kisses!! - 1 y
@Screenwriter I was unemployed 30 years ago. I collected unemployment while I finished my Master Degree. I stopped drinking because it would be one less thing that i had to spend money on. When I finally got through grad school and found a job I decided not to drink anymore.

@exitseven Not saying anyone needs to be a tea totaler (sp), but I used to have a subscription to Wine Spectator. Always had great ratings of good new wines. One guy wrote to the editor about having doubts about how much he was drinking. He said he went through one to two BOTTLES of wine daily.
The editor gently suggested he get help. This was 25 years ago when they hadn't ratcheted down the number of drinks per week that is considered healthy as they have. But a bottle a day? Sounds like dependency. And I think people slip into it.
I have a friend who I think drinks too much. Have another one who's dead who constantly called herself a lush. I hated that she did that.
However, once she visited me and another time I visited her and she was driving me in her car while she was drinking alcohol! I was nervous. We had a discussion about this and she said, she had a chronic illness, it was her only pleasure and she wasn't stopping it.
I think it might be the same way with my current friend.
They both had money and could afford this. I do not. But, I also don't have the desire to do so. Waking up sluggish in the morning when I have. a garden to tend to and want to take a bike ride, or walk.
It seems to me there's too much to do to be numbed by alcohol. Too much clear headed pleasure. - 1 y
@Screenwriter I liked craft beer. there is something that was only made where I go on vacation and the only time i miss it is when I see it in the grocery store.

@exitseven I like black beer: guinness stout, porters. Beer that tastes like steak!! I don't drink it much, but water-beer seems a waste of time to drink. Love port, sauternes, pinot noirs. A good botrytis riesling. Crisp chardonnays. They add sparkle to good food.

In need 3 strong drinks or more to feel something, but after this amount of alc I sleep bad. Therefore I avoid alcohol if I can because it gives me nothing.

m 1 yIt’s nice to have a glass of wine that complements the meal. Or a cold wheat beer on a hot day. But I don’t like the feeling of being drunk.
10 Reply I never go to the point of being blind drunk
And if I’m being honest it’s more of a social lubricant
If I’m with a group if close friends I don’t need to drink they already know me
But a few decent sips give me an excuse to have a drawn out conversation with a relative stranger10 Reply- 335 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic.
1 yAs others have said, wine and beer are particularly well suited for a meal. A mixed drink or two can basically be something to do with your hands that also tastes good if your gonna be talking to people for a couple of hours. But no, I don't want to end up slurring my speech or wake up miserable with a headache and messed up stomach the next morning. Did that a few times in college. Never again.
10 Reply 731 opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic. I've never understood these people just drink to get drunk,
I like to have a drink once in a while, it could be with my working in countries where the consumption of alcohol is illegal, that I savour which ever alcoholic beverage I'm drinking.

To enjoy it , I love the taste of craft beers , preferably IPA’s because I love the taste of hops , but I appreciate other styles of beer as well. Why me and my brother and best friend are trying to open a brewery and start our own business. We been brewing beer for the past year and a half now and having such a fun time doing it. We brewed some really good tasting beers that we got a lot of compliments for , so we aren’t giving up whatsoever.
00 ReplyI enjoy the taste of good beer and good red wine. I enjoy the experience of being inebriated. I don't get trashed or have hangovers, but I have a relatively high tolerance to alcohol. I don't drink all that often though.

1 yThe older I get, the more I want to actually enjoy the taste vs just to get drunk. But sometimes if I'm feeling down, I will drink to get drunk. But it's rare now.

1 yI’ve always enjoyed. But lead me to terrible things 🙁. DUI, loss of relationships, bad relationships with family. Forever addiction. A fatty liver. Not much good comes out of partying
10 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Food & Beverage topic. No. I typically drink to shut the alcoholics up. I don't much care for alcohol. But if you're with a group of people who are drinking, they're like "why aren't you drinking" a 1000 times. It's just easier to join them.🤣
