Bean Feast is a works outing, and there's two suggestions how this began. The bean goose was served originally at Christmas before turkeys and served to employees at the annual celebration. The second is beans and bacon were served with goose at these works get togethers.

Not Cutting the Mustard is possibly an American expression used to describe something or someone not meeting a certain standard. Once a worker becomes too old to harvest the mustard plant, they became known as being unable to cut the mustard.
A second source possibly comes from the Romans and someone too sick to cut down a mustard tree, to obtain a cure from this important medicinal plant.

Given the Cold Shoulder can be traced back to the great banquets of medieval England that lasted for days, even weeks. It was customary to signal the end of festivities by serving slices from shoulders of cold beef, mutton, or pork.

To Take the Cake is an American expression, and the cake would be given as a prize, though it probably originated from the Bible when a biblical knight would be rewarded with a cake, and this was adopted in America.
