Have you tried Gentleman's relish?

Gentleman's relish is going to be discontinued because of falling sales. Produced since 1820 the company says it's no longer commercially viable.

But I've never seen it in the shops. Perhaps it lurks in some dark corner of those delicatessens that charge £20 for mayonnaise.

It actually sounds quite nice, it's anchovy paste and there's a few recipes online to make your own so I might give it ago if I can get hold of some frozen fish to mash up.

Never had it.
We have similar fish paste but made of mackerel or sprat with addition of tomato mark and pepper bell powder.
It was good in the 1980/90ties according to my father as sea was full of fish and smaller fishes were economically not suitable for fileting and were grind to a paste. Now I wouldn't recommend to eat that, because it's mystery fish slob that contains mostly guts, heads and bones.

I think anchovies are a bit like marmite, you either like them or you don't.

I like them on pizzas, but I can't recall seeing them mentioned on the list of ingredients of pizzas for a long time.

Perhaps the taste for anchovies has gone out of fashion?

You suggested you was going to buy some anchovies, but I've never seen frozen anchovies, they usually come in a little tin in oil.

I'll give you Limey's credit for a valiant try at marketing something as unappealing as anchovy butter.

Gentleman's Relish sounds absolutely posh. I'm sure "Anchovy Paste" would never sell as well.

This is right up there with trying to market caviar as an exclusive delicacy for only the most refined palettes of royalty and aristocrats. Yeah that marketing campaign didn't work on me either, LOL.

I have tried it, and it’s a real old-school punch of flavor 😄. Very salty, very anchovy, with that buttery, spicy warmth that wakes you up. I had it first in a tiny London café on hot toast with a soft-boiled egg, and it was unforgettable.

Homemade versions with good anchovies, butter, and a hint of nutmeg and cayenne come surprisingly close.

That's not something I've ever seen, either here in the states or during the times I've spent in the UK.

It doesn't look that appetizing to me. Reminds me of e a UK version of Vegemite from Australia. You have to develop a taste for it, which I didn't.

Yes - I’ve tried Patum Peperium, Gentleman’s Relish, in fact I have half a dozen pots in my fridge, be warned it is extremely salty, you’ll need a recipe that will buffer that saltiness, just like marmite/vegemite so you’ll either like it or loath it.
