James The Foodie · Accepted Answer

My favorite kind of pizza is a classic Margherita, Neapolitan style 🍕
Thin, soft, slightly chewy crust with a puffy leopard-spotted cornicione, sweet San Marzano tomato sauce, creamy fior di latte or buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, and a drizzle of good extra virgin olive oil.

In Naples I once had one so simple yet perfect, it felt like eating pure harmony.

Matzo Pizza Home of the many celebrities and criminals and tabloid scandals and other weirdness... ======= "Matzo pizza" (or Matzahpizza) is a long-standing historical nickname for Massapequa, Long Island, New York. Why Massapequa is Called "Matzo Pizza" • Cultural Mix: The nickname comes from the town's large and historic Jewish (matzo) and Italian (pizza) populations. • Local Slang: For decades, locals and regional residents used the term playfully to describe the cultural makeup of the community. Would you like to know more about local pizzerias in Massapequa or the history of the town's nickname? History of the town's nickname The history behind Massapequa's nickname, "Matzo Pizza" (or "Matzah-Pizza"), reflects the post-World War II migration patterns that shaped modern Long Island. The moniker grew from local slang into a widely recognized regional term. 1. The Post-War Suburb Boom Prior to the 1940s and 1950s, Massapequa was a much smaller, largely rural community. Following WWII, developers like William Levitt revolutionized suburban housing across Long Island, prompting a massive exodus from New York City boroughs like Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Among the primary groups migrating out to the newly minted suburbs were working- and middle-class Jewish and Italian families. As they settled heavily into Massapequa, the town’s demographic landscape transformed dramatically into a distinct cultural blend. 2. Coining the Moniker The term itself references a popular Passover dish where traditional leavened pizza crust is replaced with a sheet of matzo. Local history suggests that the nickname was popularized—and potentially even coined—by Alexander Baldwin, a beloved social studies teacher and football coach at Massapequa High School (and father to actors Alec, William, Stephen, and Daniel Baldwin). By combining the staples of both dominant heritages, the playful portmanteau captured the exact cultural makeup of the student body and the community at large. 3. LIRR Conductors and Media Fame By the late 1970s and 1980s, the nickname had transcended school hallways and entered mainstream regional culture: • Train Announcements: Commuters from that era frequently recall Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) conductors using their PA systems to playfully announce, "Next stop, Matzo Pizza!" as the train rolled into the Massapequa station. • National Spotlight: In a August 1980 Newsday profile about rising Hollywood actor and Massapequa native Steve Guttenberg, the headline famously read: "Massapequa's Brash Young Star: Can't Stop The Kid From 'Matzo-Pizza'". The moniker remains a humorous badge of honor for generations of locals who grew up surrounded by a vibrant mix of Jewish delis and Italian pizzerias.
