Accept Your Flaws

"Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference" -Serenity Prayer

Instead of trying to be the best, try to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. Always strive to better yourself when you can, and when it comes to things you couldn't change even if you tried...let them go. A portrait is made up of varied elements; no one detail alone decides whether or not it's beautiful.

See yourself in broader terms like others do and focus on and highlight your best traits, not your worst.

...and realize others have flaws, too

I personally wouldn't want perfection in my friends and lovers. Because perfection loses the human element. Flaws provide depth and relatability when balanced with positive aspects.

"I think we are all hopelessly flawed"

-Louisa May Alcott

Accept that others will have different opinions

And that's okay! Just as you are entitled to live your life however you see fit, they are entitled to have an opinion on it. And vice versa. Stifling that is equal to thought policing and antithetical to personal liberty. Who's to say whether either side is right or wrong, anyway? It's an opinion, after all.

Instead of trying to change those you disagree with, choose to ignore them.

“I don't agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

-Evelyn Beatrice Hall

Realize hatred is almost always intrinsically tied to ignorance

Life is hard and confusing. Part of what makes it hard are "haters". And haters mostly hate because they can't deal with just how difficult life can be. It's a vicious cycle and we can't break it because it's part of the human condition.

However, we can choose to disengage. And understand that vitriol rarely has substance or value. It's usually rooted in personal insecurities over ones own shortcomings and ignorance. And because so many of us respond to hate with more hate, it spreads like a virus.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

-Martin Luther King, Jr

Life's meaning comes from within

It would have been nice if life came with answers to the big questions like..what are we even doing here. But it doesn't. Instead, we have to search out or create meaning, ourselves.

Some may find it in religion. Others in hedonism. Others in love. Some may choose to believe there is no meaning at all. And none are wrong. Because it becomes the meaning of *their* life if they believe it and is true of their experience. Learn to coexist and realize happiness is a goal we all have in common.

" Pilgrim, in your journey
You may travel far,
For pilgrim it's a long way
To find out who you are"

-Enya
