Well for me, I take the word seriously and it makes me mad that society has turned "I love you" into a cliché. Most people who say it to each other don't really have a concept of what love is. I've had a guy or two tell me way too early that they were in love with me and it totally freaked me out. Killed it. Then a few where I really liked them, and I just wasn't ready to say it back. I think everyone wants to be loved, but it has to be at the right time with the right person or else it shatters the illusion.
If you're asking this, you must not know the girl very well or must not have been dating her for too long, so you're shocked/taken off guard as to what to say back. Sometimes people jump the gun. Women want to be loved, so with the slightest hint of infatuation and they drop the bomb on you, hoping you'll either feel same or being guilted into saying it back. If I were you, I'd run. But if this is a girl that you actually care about (just aren't in love with yet) I would tell her. Tell her that you're flattered and that you care about her, you're just not there yet. That you don't wanna say it unless you mean it.

I think saying "I love you" is almost more important than having sex with someone. I love you says: I want you, I am committed to you, I want you in my life, it says future and it also is a responsibility. I one time dated a man for about 8 months, he said I love you about two months in right after we started our sexual relationship. I FREAKED OUT. I cared for him very much, I really liked him but loved him? All I kept thinking when he would tell me is this man wants me be "the rest of his life" and I was so not ready for that at that time. I never once told him I loved him but then when I broke up with him, I absolutely knew I was a breaking his heart and it was just too much responsibility for me to handle.
People just say it way to quick now.

depends on who they are, what our relationship is/how long and how strongly I feel for them. But to be told that someone is in love with you, even if you might not feel the same, is something to appreciate. After all, that person feels strongly enough about you and recognizes and cherishes something special about you, enough to say that they genuinely care about you and accept/appreciate you as you are. That is a big compliment and the receiver of that message must recognize it took a lot of courage for that person to express that to them as well. It should be somewhat appreciated either way - despite whether that feeling is reciprocated or not.

I'm unfortunately a little too cynical, I can appreciate it when someone says that to me, but being unnaturally distrusting, it takes a lot of effort for me to believe they mean it. But it's very rewarding when they've earned my trust, I stay fiercely loyal and protective of that person once I know they're being sincere with me :3

Actually nothing. I used to blush and stuff, but when high school came and I hung out with this girl who said I love you like any other casual word, I realized I love you has multiple degrees of meaning, not just romantically or biologically.

It happened when me and him were alone in the basement of a friends house (Halloween Party I think).
Alex and I were having a little, dark, romantic, make out session on the couch. We have already been with each other for 2 or 3 months and he stopped for a second. He looked at me and said "I love you Shay" and I was like :O :O :O :O :O
He just acted like nothing happened and kept on kissing me
I stopped and said "I love you Alex"
But we act like nothing happened.
Till this day we still LOVE each other <3 and say it all the time

In my case, when my bf first told me that I wasn't in that stage yet, so I was a bit surprised, but I was honest with him and told him I liked him a lot but still wasn't sure I loved him and I didn't want to lead him on. He is always so understanding and told me to only say I love you back when I really meant it. When I did I felt so shy about it lol. But now that we both feel it, hearing I love you or even him showing how he loves me is like needing air to breathe. And I love showing it to him everyday how much I care about him too. Lame lame lame I am aware... But what can I say? I am in love with him. I love him. Even after 8 months. More than ever.

If I love the person (e. g: close family member, best friend, so) then i'd be happy and say i love you back.
If I don't love the person then... i'd feel really awkward and maybe try to change the topic of our discussion or just smile.. i'd do anything but give them the false hope that i love them back.

Honestly I love you is the easier thing in the world to say. When I mean it it super easy to say just because my family says it all the time. Even if it's not sincere it's easy to say (but I seldom say it if I don't mean it). It's just a phrase like hi or goodbye

If I love them it's just magical and I feel surprised.
Now if I like them/not seriously dating, then it's an immediate no no. I had a boyfriend, we dated for about 2 weeks, we've never even kissed and he says I love you. Needless to say, we broke up the next day.

My reaction is to be careful not to immediately reviprocate ifI DO love them, so that it doesn't immidiately get neutralized. I think it is important to acknowledge the gravity of the confession with "love ya too!" Let it sink in and have full meaning. You can show you reciprocate with your eyes.

Honestly it depends whether or not if it an "the moment" feeling or a commitment. Usually I freeze and overthink it, but don't say it if you do mean it. Letting a person know you don't feel the same is heartbreaking but no matter what it should be understood.
