Tanning became popular in the West because wealthy people could afford to go on vacation in tropical regions of the world. They'd come back with tans and all that. It was seen as a status symbol that became a beauty standard. Now if only those beauty standards extended to people with naturally darker skin we would be in a better spot.
It's sort of like how in East Asia the workers who were tan were usually poor and the nobles were pale and rich. It's one of the reasons light skin is more prized there. In more recent times Eurocentric beauty standards have also influenced them.
A lot of human beauty comes down to vanity and wealth. This doesn't factor things in like colonialism and imperialism and all that which is another can of worms.
Preference of appearance. Everyone has a particular skin tone they look best in. Some women look better a bit more pale. But some girls, when they get darker they just look better. Can't really explain why. It's just a weird truth. That said.
Why some girls have an obsession with getting more and more tan probably has to do with a social aspect of where she was raised. Most places tend to talk about pale being bad and tan being good, but if you get a fake tan that is mocked. Unless you're in an area where fake tans are common, then you may actually be commended on your fake tan as long as it's good. It's interesting lol
Tanned skin has been associated with health and pale skin with sickness. In general, white women tan if they feel like their skin doesn’t look too healthy and they believe a tan will give them what they call a ‘healthy’ glow.
In terms of the western world, tanned skin became to mean money (can afford to take take vacations) and outdoorsy lifestyle. Paleness is associated with having no social life, not being popular or possibly being unattractive, or simply older. If you're young, attractive, popular and rich you go to the beach a lot and you get tan.
Doctors tell people tanning isn't a good idea. It ages your skin and may lead to skin cancer. Schools here try to teach the students not to tan or use tanning beds, but they do it anyway.
As an extremely pale person myself I don't like tanning... simply because I'm lazy.
But, the amount of people who ask me if I'm sick or haven't had a chance to "get around to it" like it's some kind of expectation is pretty high. Especially when I bring out my beacons (legs) when it starts to get warmer.
It used to shame me into getting a spray tan every week but it is SO much maintenance so I don't bother and just embrace what I have, but not everyone is going to feel that way when unsolicited comments are continually given
It's a social norm, and can't we just do whatever we like to our looks without fearing what men find attractive? 😐

In our society, white skin is deemed unattractive. That's simply how it is. On magazines and in commercials, everywhere you look there are women with perfectly caramelized skin starting in commercials and movies and advertisements. There isn't a single pale person in sight.
Also, paleness is viewed as having to be forced to work inside an office all day without seeing the sun while tans are viewed as having the money to go tanning or to go to the tropics.
Because a tan is a status symbol. It says you have the time and resources to go on vacation OR you can afford to waste money on tanning salons.
couldn't give a damn I'm the palest out of nearly all my friends. Some people I know don't like it or don't wear shorts because of it, while I don't think it matters, in attraction your body and personality counts a lot more than skin colour.
I'm pale as hell. And don't tan. So I can't really, it just burns me. So I'm not into it but I would like to tan. It looks pretty and healthy. I don't like my pale skin but I have to embrace it I guess. Never gonna change.
They wanna get that golden look. It's not about looking brown lol a tanned White person that looks brown actually looks like he's been overcooked, you can't reach a brow natural-looking color with tanning.

The reality is, look at all the super wealthy, most chic women in the world… they’re ALL FAIR-skinned. They have beautiful, White, porcelain skin, and it’s so chic and fabulous. Only cheap, trendy girls tan. Especially if it’s from a bed, box, or machine. Unless you’re Jackie-O, and tanning naturally from the sailboat, dahling, don’t do it. NOT chic. :)
I'm the same. It's really the cosmetics industry influencing young girls to think they are not beautiful unless they modify the way the look with tan, lipstick, hair, eyeliner etc. It's the same with black women
I don't do. I stay away from the sun as much as possible to prevent it. My tanned skin does not look good.
I'm not white so I don't need to tan. I don't think all white women tan though I think some tan because they want that skin complexion of another race
Because it's hot... i do that too but naturally on the sun, i don't go to solariums. We just find it cool... that's all.
Because they see themselves unattractive with white skin and they find others with tan or darker skin to be more pretty.

Because the dominant narrative says that White people suck and having pale skin sucks and is unattractive. And women are always the first ones to fall for whatever is trendy and socially acceptable.

I don't tan much. But I am a native Californian who grew-up around the beach and it just happens naturally. There's something summery about it to me.
