If your definition of "paying for friends" is using money to receive clothing and other materials and to go to fundraisers, social events, trips, etc. for your own use and benefit with people who you feel connected with, then yes, you're paying for friends.

    No.

The media and such creates stereotypes of fraternities and sororities, but honestly, it's not true. Well, actually, it's true on some level (a reason why it's a stereotype), but you can't base everything off of what everyone has been telling you.

There's more to fraternities and sororities than partying, or drinking, or whatever. It really depends on the type. A lot of sororities and fraternities nowadays not only help you with your social life, but it can really improve your skills and values, as well. Some fraternities and sororities are even deeply rooted in helping others and doing volunteer or community service.

Again, it depends. The thing is, you'll never know until you rush. The reputation of a certain fraternity and sorority changes every year, so unless you get to really know the fraternity or sorority and their members you can't judge.

And that's the beauty of the rush. You get a feel for each of the fraternity/sorority, and you get to decide if you want to be a part of it or not. There's no harm in trying.

You never know, being in fraternity/sorority can open up many doors for you, whether it be with connections, experiences, self-discovery, friendship, or career opportunities.

As I said, it never hurts to try. Don't give in to stereotypes.

I always notice that the stereotypes have always held true. I can't think of one frat that people like. I graduated anyways.

Impossible. Not all stereotypes are true and you know that. There's no way to prove that either. The reason why you probably didn't like any of the fraternities is maybe because you just don't plain like it. Which is fine, a lot of people are the same. Plus, it also really depends on the college/university you go to. There's a lot of factors that are put into play.

Well a lot of the Greeks were very stereotypical.

Lol why are you insisting on this when you say it doesn't matter since you graduated anyways?

You don't have to pay attention to it. No one's forcing you to.

So does everything else. There are other events; there are places you can go to/visit; there are other clubs/organizations/intramural sports/activities/community service/work (who wouldn't want to earn extra cash?)/whatever else you can do. You wouldn't notice it if you paid so much attention to it.

And if what I said wasn't true, then you picked the wrong place to attend. Next time, pick a college/university that you'll actually like and enjoy rather than complaining about stuff you can't do.

Okay, I'm totally saying this as someone who never was a part of a sorority (I didn't live on campus so I just never did that stuff)...but I don't think it's "paying for friends" or anything like that. There's tons of different reasons for joining - just to be a part of something; to meet people; because of family obligations (like legacy members); for extracurricular mention on the scholastic resume; etc etc.

To me, it's no different than joining a sports team or a club...it's just another venue for people to connect, whatever the reason may be :)

Okay, so I have been in a sorority for a full year. I've recently made the decision to drop it because it's just not for me. Most of the girls were not open and friendly, they all had small cliques and I had very few friends. It is overrated and not worth the money!! Sure it sounds nice and there is a lot of philanthropy and good stuff to it, but if you haven't found you're clique in the sorority, it won't be fun!!

"Theres ton of different reasons to join"... to be apart of something... to meet people... just listen to fucks explain the actual reason u pay to get into that bullshit... to pay... for friends. I garuntee u can't explain one thing a sorority has done to make college life easier besides giving u white friends to hang out with so u dont feel like such a lame. Imagine how college life would be if there werent sororities or frats to poison the social enviroment of college and ruin it for people who aren't interested in bullshit like that. Honestly dont u think everyone would find people to make connections with easier if we werent segregated in frats and sororities in the first place? Frats and sororities exist for what reason exactly? To create labels? Cause thats all I've seen them do. I've never seen or heard a solid example of someone benefiting from a frat or sorority in life after college...

You can make money while in a fraternity. That's the only good thing.

You're not paying for friends. You're joining an organization that is really close to one another.

I guess but still I mean it just seems overrated to me. I can be part of other organizations for free.
