OMG Yeah i guess there is. I can't count how many times people started talking to me on bus or subway ! And i should mention that i always have headphones and i make it obvious when they talk to me like i take one out and then put right in again and they still talk! On Valentine's day on Subway a woman was telling me all about her date while i had my headphones on and i would only take it out when she was asking me something for 3 times. But i should also mention i got so many tips when i was working in a cafe for that. So it's not always a bad thing
Well if you don't give them a reason not to think you're nice, of course they will think that you are. You smile, and nod, act polite, those people can seem nice even if they aren't. And I think you are nice too, from the conversations I had with you, there is no doubt in my mind that you are. You're too nice in fact, that is why some poeple in your life take advantage of it.

Well you smile and nod... so that's an automatic positive response to whatever interaction people give you. I could certainly see that as causing people to think you're nice.
Maybe attend a Dale Carnegie course to work on losing the awkwardness around people? I went twice - the first time obviously didn't work (just kidding) ;-)
