Why does she put herself down when talking to me?

1) Fishing for a compliment (she should earn these for positive behaviour), or,

2) Wish to present herself as no threat (you may both have issues), or,

3) Fishing for a fight (if you agree, you get a string of persecution garbage).

One and three are standard tactics of a relative of mine when trying to spread an unhappy mood that drive me up the wall. I decline to be manipulated into a compliment several times, and they will pick away, and pick away until I eventually agree with a self put down, which will trigger a frothing torrent of abuse. When I don't rise to this, it gets profane and if I stick around long enough violent as the frustration at no response builds. The only resolution I've found is infrequent and well spaced contact of short duration.

Being a relative, I don't have the luxury of no contact. It is different with a manipulative partner in the early stages of a relationship. Tell her it isn't a positive behavior for any of these reasons and not to waste both of your time with it. If she doesn't stop, move on.

Because she has low self-confidence. You should tell her to not put herself down. Encourage her by saying, "no, you're not stupid or pathetic."
