Why does my mom not let me wear crop tops?

Question

I am almost 17 years old, and if i want to wear something as simple as a tube top and skinny jeans my mom will tell me “you can wear that around the house or in the summer but you can’t go out in that” what i don’t understand is that it’s my body, i should be able to dress the way i want to. Last summer i was wearing shorts and a tank top (I am also quite healthy i’m like 5’6 and 118 pounds) and my mom called me sleezy just for wearing what i wanted to wear, it wasn’t suggestive at all, and i actually cried over it. I just don’t understand why i can’t wear what i want as a teenager, it’s my body and i should be be able to make some of my own choices at this age.

As an older guy.. and a solo parent of a now adult daughter.. I've been there where your mom's at.. I'll give you the explanation I think you should have. However cliche it may be

First off, yes, you're right. You should be able to dress and express yourself however you want. After all, the way you dress is a reflection of your culture and of your identity. But...

Now, as a parent, I'll give you why I locked horns with my kid for years over this subject. Problem you currently have is that your mother's got a certain wisdom. See, we men are not the "smartest" social creatures around. We're very driven by biological stimuli even though we try to behave. A young and attractive girl wearing form fitting clothes that show off her 'assets' for everyone to admire can potentially project certain signals that you may not necessarily be wanting to project. And all our personal interactions with one another are highly dependent on signals/hints. Your mom's trying to protect you from inadvertently sending the wrong signals to the wrong person.

As a parent, we have a hard time balancing what's safe, positive, and appropriate on all levels.

Your mom doesn't want you to wear stuff like that because it could give guys the wrong ideas about you. Crop tops/ tube tops, whatever you call them are very easy to pull down and cause you embarrassment. Boys these days don't have respect for young women like yourself. She is trying hard to protect you for as long as she can because she loves you.
I'm also a parent with a grown daughter. I treated her very similarly to how your mom is treating you. Now that she's grown she thanked us for being strict with her. I think if you obey your mother's rules you will also be thanking her in 5 or 10 years.

All my girlfriends in hugh school who wore crop tops slept with a lot of guys. They would always carry cindoms in their purses because they would sleep with dudes like on the spot. I was much too shy for such antics. I also was too shy to show my stomach. Very vulnerable area of the body.

Yea its your body but you're also a minor living in her house with her rules. I’d tell my kids not to be dressing “fast” either. When you turn 18, move out and go off to college then im sure she won't care as much about how you dress

There's a limit to what you can wear at that age, of course. Though a crop top shouldn't be too much of a deal.

Well, her house, her rules and you will be 18 soon enough, so focus on doing what it takes to move out once you turn 18. But don't expect anything to change just because you turned 18.
