Some girls will tell me "You're cute/attractive/hot" and then tell me about the hotter guy they know. What's up with this? Why would people do this?

Depends on the context.

She could just be engaging in general conversation with you. Women do this all the time, like "he's cute, she's hot".

Or it could be a subtle form of manipulative seduction, like 'negging' in pick up. She may or may not even be aware she's doing it.

Also... the fact that a woman thinks you're attractive, but that another man is more attractive may just be a plain fact. It's not actually "playing down your looks" at all.

What? it doesn't mean they're downplaying your attractive. You're not the only attractive guy, and a compliment on your appearance doesn't mean they want to marry you.
