Why do some girls get awkward and resistant when they find out a guy she likes likes her back?

Here's an example: I was doing job training and when I transferred, there was a going away party. Everyone went except for one girl, a girl whom I really wanted to go. Her friends told me that she confessed she liked me and was really sad I was being transferred, and they urged me to talk to her. So I tracked her down and told her I really wanted her to go and I wanted to spend some time with her. She was too busy and was committed to not going to my going away party. I found her my last day and again, she was very resistant and said very little. After I moved to a different state, people would call me and hand her the phone, but it was kinda late.

I've seen stuff like that happen more than once: a girl will convey interest but become very resistant and awkward when they find I like them back. It seems kind of backwards and I would assume a girl would be thrilled and become confident. Why might a girl become nervous and evasive when they're into me and find out I like them? (It doesn't seem as simple as "you got the wrong idea", because the girls have told their friends she liked me.)

Haha humans are weird and illogical sometimes. But here’s what I think:
The value of something is higher when you don’t have it. She wanted you when she don’t know if you like her back. Because she thought she couldn’t have you and having you would be the best thing ever.
But when you said you like her back, directly it is definitely a good thing right. But in her mind she might be thinking oh that’s it? The internal value decreases, though there’s no change to externally, you are still you. This is the basis why people play hard to get because it will make the people want them more. But I think it is very twisted to do so.


Alternatively, she may not be ready for a relationship yet. It didn’t occur to her when she told her friends. But now that you are interested, she has to enter the relationship and she is not ready.


Or maybe, because you are transferring? Away from her. And she thinks that is not going to work out? Because of the distance

Kind of hard to explain, but when I was in elementary or middle school, I'd act offended or really mad when I'd find out a guy liked me because I thought it would make me cooler? Also, whenever someone likes me I INSTANTLY start liking them, and that causes me to be really nervous around them, so maybe she likes you and gets really nervous when you're together?
