What does it mean if one day girl puts effort into conversations, but other day she's just being polite and gives short responses?

It could be a hint that she is not comfortable talking extensively with the same person. I feel that a lot of people don't like when messages, texts or conversations take too long.

When people have nothing new to say, then they will tend to be short with their replies. Not everyone likes long conversations. I know because I am one of those people.

I much rather be short and concise than to talk to say nothing when conversing with people.

She is being polite but also indicates that she is not into having a lengthy conversation. Best is just to let it be and not insist.
