Why do I have to look to the side when people talk to me?

I can't focus if i make irect eye contact if i know the person and theyre explaining something to me.

If i hardly know them then i can often keep eye contact

But a lot of the time when someone talks to me my eyes look to the side... I don't know why.

Probably because you do not like to be told to do things and direct eye contact is an enforcement of request.
