As far as I understood, girls in general seem to like being friends with friendly kind guys, but not to have sex. Do girls thus always want unfriendly, dominant or rough alpha males? Is that kind of alpha males not rather outdated in a civilised society?

they want to be with "nice" guys, that's why planty of "nice" guys are in relationships. Women dont actually want bad boys, they just want capable, strong men and those "bad" boys are usually better than the "nice" guys

Who we're biologically attracted to does not get outdated. We like who we like. And if by friendly you mean not attractive or fat or not clean, then of course we won't want sex.

With friendly I mean a guy not behaving as an alpha male, not aggressive, not insisting too much, not harrassing, etc. Just kind and friendly, but still hetero, although more beta type. No connection with fat or not clean, and concerning being attractive this depends indeed on instinct. Life is never about winners and loosers. Too much aggressiveness leads often to the contrary of life, and only to a social mess, useless violence, gangs, etc...
