They are the vowels used in English. They're sometimes called the singing letters because you can sing them as one note. Whereas other letters will turn often into a vowel eg Jaaaaaaaaaaaa or Teeeeeeeee. Kaaaaaaa. They're also formed with an open mouth.

Y ISN'T a vowel because it's long forms aren't Y's but other vowels.

They are all vowels, they are different from consonants because they are always voiced when pronounced, while consonant can be voiced or voiceless.
You can combine then to form different sounds , sometimes a compound of vowel is called dipthong.
Even thou in English there are 5 written vowels, from a phonetic point of view there are 12 vocalic sounds divided in 7 short vowels and 5 long one.
