If someone referred to my friend as "the pretty one," does that mean that my friend is considered prettier than me?

I was once talking with an older female neighbor and when I casually mentioned my female friend she asked „oh the pretty one?“. Does this mean she thinks I'm not as good looking as her?

No, I think you’re reading too much into it. She is probably better at remembering people’s appearances than their names. So she asked if the pretty friend that she’d seen with you was the one to whom you were referring. Her motives were to be friendly to you. As your neighbour. Make conversation.

Probably, but that's absolutely not what your neighbor was saying. At all. Just that she remembers the girl as being pretty. She might also think you are pretty, and might have also referred to you as the pretty one if someone else was trying to describe you to her and she was trying to recall who was being talked about.

If you describe the two of you, I'm sure I could figure out who the prettier one was, but why does it matter?
