Why does it bother people when you sit by yourself alone?

This is only true of women. Men sit alone all the time and nobody cares.
It’s a throwback to an old value system. Most people still hold women in high regard. We want them to be comfortable and happy. Some part of us knows the uncomfortable and unhappy reality of loneliness. So we assume the worst and intervene, often unnecessarily. Being concerned takes a bad rap sometimes. I, for one, would much rather go make sure someone is feeling okay and take some sh*t because they just wanted to be alone than think about going over and talking myself out of it only to find out the next day they were going through something horrible and took their own life. Call me a busy body or a nosy jerk, whatever. I don’t want to live in a society where nobody cares about each other. Life is hard enough when you have good people around you. It’s a full on nightmare when you feel like you’re going it alone.

People like to be part of a group, they feel safer that way. When they see someone sitting alone, they know that they themselves are not part of that person's group, and that scares them. What might they be missing?

Most people are followers of social norms so when someone doesn't follow those norms it makes them uncomfortable.
