Because the mask of anonymity frees you from consequences, and with a majority of people (even in adulthood) viewing morality as reward vs punishment, rather than the intensely complex understanding of what is right and wrong based on specific circumstances, consequences are the only reason they act “good” at all. Take that away, and that’s who they would truly be.

The fear of judgement is strong. Being vulnerable is hard and the possibility of being judged poorly on something you already may be insecure about may keep you from doing it in person.

It takes a lot to reveal certain aspects of yourself due to social stigma and fear of repercussions. I'm a very naturally introverted person. I would only reveal certain things when I truly trust someone or feel like it is my best bet.
