Under short and flowy dresses/skirts do women usually wear shorts underneath or just underwear?

So my girlfriend recently made a revelation that sort of blew my mind.

I kind of figured that women would wear only underwear under long dresses/skirts, and I was right, I saw my girlfriend getting dressed and that's what she did.

But the weather's gotten hot and the other day I saw her throw on a pretty short and flowy dress that hit only slightly longer than mid-thigh and rode up when sitting over her bra and underwear and then she... just put her shoes on and headed out that way. She didn't put on shorts underneath.

And the whole time I was out with her I kept feeling some second hand embarrassment for her. As if her underwear would be flashed in public in any minute. I kept paying attention to how the wind blew her dress. How it rode up when she sat and crossed her legs. When she climbed up stairs. Thankfully her underwear was never flashed.

When I brought this thing up of why she didn't wear shorts underneath her short dress she literally spit out her water at me and bursted out laughing. About how she never met another woman who does this.

And then I brought up embarrassment or underwear being flashed and she said that as long as you keep your legs together, squat instead of bending over to get something, lightly hold your dress in the wind, etc, no one should ever see your underwear anyway. And that even if anyone saw her underwear she wouldn't care anyway because she wears bikinis at the beach all the time and has bikini pics on her social media.

And honestly mind blown. I'm wondering if most women do what my girlfriend does because I genuinely don't know.

What country and culture you are from? How to dress does make difference between places and nations. I personally don't wear extra shorts under skirts and dresses. Underwear is made to prevent private area getting seen. There's really no need to have one more extra layer to protect what's made for protection.

I'm just American. How about you? American dress codes can vary depending on the area. Some areas are really religious and conservative and others don't care if you show a lot of skin. My area is a mix. To me it seems kind of bold to not wear extra shorts under skirts and dresses but then again I'm a guy, what do I know about women's fashion? Lol. Your reasoning as to underwear preventing private are from getting seen and there not needing an extra layer does make sense.

And a question. Hopefully this doesn't sound weird or creepy sorry if it does. But coincidentally or not your profile picture is very on topic appropriate for this question. That gray dress seems extremely short to me, no offense intended. Were you wearing shorts under THAT dress? I don't know it just seems especially short to me so seems kind of bold to wear only underwear under it and no shorts. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Wear what makes you feel good.

I’m on the West Coast, and I totally get what you mean about how it varies by region. Out here, you almost never see girls adding extra shorts under short skirts or dresses, unless it’s one of those built-in tennis skort things.
Honestly, I don’t think it’s a big deal. If you’re worried about your girlfriend flashing someone in a short skirt, the real fix is reminding her to just be mindful of how she moves. Safety shorts or no safety shorts, they’re not a free pass to sit or bend carelessly and let everything show.
And yep, that gray dress is short, especially in that photo where I was sitting down. It was the middle of summer and blazing hot, so I did not wear extra layer underneath. I’ve loved short skirts since I was little, though, and I’ve pretty much mastered how to move without giving the whole world a show. If something slips every once in a while… oh well, it happens.

Yup it certainly is short, especially when sitting, lol. You look great though, and I assume you're confident, and that's all that matters! And ah. I definitely would've gussed that it's a summer outfit, naturally, lol. That makes sense. Extra layers in heat is not a good thing. And that makes sense. If you're used to it it's no big deal.

A joke of mine, not sure if it's a good one, but if you've ever seen anime you pretty much mastered the anime girl short skirt trick where even if their skirts are absurdly short somehow you never end up seeing their underwear even when in intense action, lol.

But yeah. Slip ups may happen every once in a while. They're only a huge deal if you make it a huge deal I guess.

As a minor you should really be careful writing stuff like that online, especially when using your actual face as a profile picture. I know at 17 you're only a year from being 18 and you're not a literal child anymore but there are a lot of middle aged men (even if they claim to be much younger) who won't hesitate to take advantage of you.
