So a month ago, I mustered up the courage to talk to a guy I've had a crush on for a while. We talked about our siblings and our interests. He and I both like hiking, so I suggested we exchange numbers, but he politely declined and told me he was seeing someone, though we could still be friends. I told him, "Not happening, buddy ; sorry." Was I foolish for starting a conversation in the first place and getting my hopes up too high by doing this?

I mean making a move on someone will be a gamble no matter what, so you have to go into it prepared for potential rejection and be self-assured enough to handle it. You made a move and it didn’t work out, so now it’s time to move on. I do think your response to him was a bit rude, like you were trying to lick your wounds by making him feel bad/rejected.
