Dropping the fan is a suggestion to be just friends.

There is obviously a demand for the classic handheld fans otherwise there wouldn't be so many manufacturers selling fans online.

So Guys if you see one being used, you will know the female might be giving a hidden signal with the fan.

I would say a high 90% of females owning a fan would know the language, but the question should be how many Guys would know she if she was flirting.

1. Apparently when buying a fan, the fan code would be included, so 90%+ is not an unrealistic figure for females knowing the code.

2. If you want the statistics of fan ownership you'll need to do some research.

What makes you think classic handheld fans are archaic, where is your evidence, look on Jeff Bezos's website he's got loads of different types.

@OlderAndWiser Not fans specifically, but props -- a book, a computer, a cup of coffee, a tray... It's more about using one's eyes and posture than anything else.

@DishLady I understand using props to flirt, but I believe there is an old set of rules for flirting with fans. Hold it in front of your face has one meaning, hold it over your heart has another meaning, etc. No one has done that stuff in the last 50+ years.

Ah! Well, to be fair it made a teeny tiny comeback with Julie Andrews + Anne Hathaway in the Princess Diaries 2 (or 3, I don't know how many they have now). Granny teaches queen-to-be how to use a fan to express herself. The more recent Elona Holms films also make use of it (hilariously bc she clearly shows that she's no idea what she's doing with a fan, however she notices her suspect using the fan to communicate with a lover). I learned A LITTLE about it from watching my one very elderly aunt who used to think it was the height of elegance to use a fan, meanwhile my gran thought it was a little parvenue if it was done off stage or outside of a gala setting.
