Where's the line between persistent and desperate?

I've seen a lot of answers from girls stating that they want a guy to be persistent and chase them, yet won't chase guys for fear of looking 'desperate' and 'clingy'. However, guys, for the most part, have this fear that chasing girls will be construed as desperate and clingy as well. Where is that fine line between being persistent and overly-persistent or desperate? What would be some behavior s characteristic of an 'attractive' level of persistence versus an 'unattractive' level?

Well for one, the girl you are persuing has to actually have some initial interest in you. You have to be well aware of your actions and the response that you get. The difference between being persistent and being desperate has mostly to do with your timing. The ultimate sign of clingyness is calling her nearly every hour. If you ask her to go out with you and she declines, then you ask her out again the next day and she declines, so you ask her the next day and so on, this pattern is a sign of clingyness. When you persue the girl you are giving her plenty of space in between. One example of a guy who persued me for about 3 years, he clearly had a crush on me, he would always ask me to go out with him once about every other month or so. I would decline politely every single time and I even straight out told him that I was not interested a couple of times, but he did not cease from asking me until now that I have a boyfriend. That was being persistent I never once saw him as clingy or desperate because he was not suffocating me. The attractive level of persistence would be set by a guy's level of confidence of course. When going in persuit, you have to show that you believe yourself worthy of the girl's attention. You have to be okay with rejection at times and seem unfazed by it the next time you ask her out. This will keep the girls wondering, trying to figure out why you didn't react to the rejection as she was expecting, making her want you even more at times. Someone who is desperate will easily give themselves away when they whine and hold it against the girl, which is very unattractive.
