Why do people act like men are shallow and not women?

Like if a athletic guy does not find obese women attractive he's a douche but women can turn a guy down for height and hair color. WTF?

You'll generally find that fit people date fit people and fat people date fat people and they are rarely called douches or shallow. The people called shallow are the people who are nit-picky about looks and say douchey things about people whose looks aren't up to their standards, especially when their own aren't up to the standard they expect. Females and males can be douchey.

I do, however, think that your'e far more likely to find a guy who who rants taht he deserves girls who are far better looking than he is, because guys see on television and movies that the chubby guy or the geek or plain joe gets the "hot chick." I hear portly guys who know the fast food specials by heart calling girls who are 5'5 140 "fat cows" all the time. Likewise for statements like, "She'd be hot if she got a boob job" or "I'd tap that, but I wouldn't date her" to when faced with their female peers who are, frankly better looking than they are, but not magazine models.

We are all human so by nature we are all shallow. I wouldn't say shallow but following our natural instinct to find the best mate, even if we aren't trying to have children our natural instinct drives us to be attracted to others who suit us genetically. I am referring to males and females. It's society that has twisted it.

Who you think is attractive is your opinion. On the other hand you should not be critical of others based on how they look. If they aren't what your looking for don't be harsh. I think women are more critical of men because men are more apt to make nasty comments if a girl is not "in their league"

Everyone who gets turned down for some characteristic in particular is bitter about it.

'Shallow' is thrown around way too much as well.

I remember being young and being given the impression that only 'shallow' girls cared about some things. Looking back, girls who cared about appearance were 'shallow'. I.e. girls who might have a sex drive and want to get physical were 'shallow' and 'not nice girls'.

In reality, the hypothetical athletic guy has every right to have standards, including turning down overweight women. If he doesn't find obese women attractive, he doesn't find them attractive, just the way it is. If obese and overweight women don't like that, well, weight is one of those things about ourselves we have control over.

I just asked a question about fat women being normalized and how these campaigns are lowering the bar for female standards. The female answerers, as you'd expect, called me a shallow pig.

If I work on my body and my career so that I can have some of the qualities that women find desirable in men then she better have some of the qualities I find desirable in women.

I answered your question you are talking about and I don't think you're a "shallow pig" but I don't think there's anything wrong with giving women some self confidence and what's meant to be a positive message either you know what I mean. I think you're completely entitled to your opinion and preference though and that's completely fine to want someone who's compatible and giving you equal what you give them.

Gender aside people are just shallow and there are always double standards. Like other answers I think there is a difference between being shallow and having a preference but I understand where you're coming from.

Women are just as shallow, but they scream and cry foul so often to throw the attention off of them. Their basic message is "men are bad for this, this, and this" while completely ignoring they do the exact same things.
