In a nutshell, in the dating/relations sense, is when the other person has a false interpretation or perception about how they view YOUR intentions towards them...

A good example that almost always happens.

Guys sees girl he finds attractive. Guy talks to girl in flirtatious way. Girl talks back to guy in conversation Guy asks for girl's phone #. Girl isn't interested in guy, but gives guy her phone # anyway.

Guy sees girl again. Guy (in his own words) asks out girl on a date. Girl says "I just wanted to be friends" to the guy. Guy shows sign of confusion or irritation in his tone of voice. Guy politely ends conversation and walks away.

The girl in this scenario misled the guy. How? By giving her phone number to a guy she wasn't interested in that was flirting with her and showing interest, without saying "i just want to be friends" from the get-go.

He perceived the receiving of the girl's number as a sign of mutual interest, but it wasn't because the girl was indirectly DISHONEST.

You can mislead someone on purpose or by accident. It is making someone believe one thing, when your intentions are something else.

It depends on the situation, but normally through poor social skills. For example a person that is really shy, can often mislead others, into thinking they are a snob. Or someone that hugs all of their friends might mislead someone else into thinking they like them. A person's body language alone can mislead someone.

However its used like jacquesvol said it could mean that you make someone think something that's not true to benefit a game. Or in some cases making someone believe you want more like a relationship, when you really only wanted to hook up. Or someone was flirtatious leading someone to believe something was going to happen, but they don't really want anything to happen and were just being flirtatious.

When I was at the Uni I used to play chess and cards, just for cents but at a rather high level. I was all the time misleading the other(s) about my hand, strategy etc. Just good game. They did the same (or tried to) , of course. If you can't stand the heath, don't come in the kitchen.
