What is the meaning of life? Seriously? Do people really not know the answer to such an obvious question?

I have heard that question "What is the meaning of life?" recently from a guy making it sound like the most difficult question ever, like its something that couldn't be answered. I'm thinking the answer to such a question can be found in the question itself. The meaning of life IS LIFE. I mean we didn't... have to be born!

The meaning of life is to literally make life... to have babies, which means to get with the opposite sex and do the deed. Whether it's a good life or a bad one is another question.

Anyone else agree?

I believe the purpose of this life is to prep you for the afterlife. To serve God in this one, to do and bring good into this world and to remain strong against your spiritual enemies. The meaning of this life is to be a soldier for God and live like a king in our true form.

@93stepsawayfromhome If there was no afterlife and all I did was cease existing I don't think I'd care much. If the alternative is true, which in my mind it is, I'd rather have lived life successfully serving the God I love than to suffer for all of eternity. If that's a risk you're willing to take then be prepared for the consequences, but nothing about my life is wasted. Everything in my faith is a value I've always held true, I live my life more fulfillingly serving God than I did without him. And I love him, I have an actual relationship with him and you could think I'm crazy as much as you want, but I think you're crazy for denying something so obvious.

@93stepsawayfromhome Everything in existence. Science says order cannot result from chaos, yet our solar system has a structure to it and specific rules it follows. According to science, this should be impossible, yet our planet is the perfect distance away to house human, animal, and plant life. If evolution is real, why would there be any other species of plant or animal? We all came from the same single cell and evolved right? So wouldn't that mean primates should not exist? Wouldn't they have died out? According to science they should have. Even thinking about on single thing and all of it's complexities, just imagine the human heart. Every single detail about it, and then think of the entire human body, not to mention how all of that varies in all animals and plants, in everything in existence! You seriously believe all of that resulted from a single atom that had no business existing in the first place and then exploding for no reason at all?

That question has been asked and pontificated upon by philosophers for millenia. What makes you think you and Bruce Lee figured it out?

There are such complexities and levels of nuance you aren't even recognizing.

That's why it's called one of the "big questions." You can't just answer it with "seriously? You guys really don't know?" in your 30s. I mean unless you have multiple phds in quantum physics, astrophysics, all subsets of theology, and basically every subject ever, and even that probably wouldn't get you any closer.

Well its not objective. So It's not 2+2=4. Math is objective, it can be measured and the result is always the same. Philosophy is subjective. You can't just say you're right about it. Other philosophers put way more effort into it than you and still had the humbleness to admit subjectivity.

I'm being honest: I don't believe there's any meaning. We live and we die. That's it. Some people can't deal with it so they start believing in an afterlife or try to give the life a purpose by saying what's good and what's bad. But I don't believe in it. I just enjoy my time while I'm alive and make the best out of it. People seem to make it way bigger than it actually is.

The concept 'meaning' is placing the subject in context of a web of relationships to other things. For example 'blue' means the nerve response normal people have to certain wavelengths of light. Each of the words in the meaning of 'blue' spread the chain of meaning through their own chain.

So since 'life' doesn't have a context the concept 'meaning' does not apply to it. Asking the meaning of life is like asking the meaning of the universe or the odor of the number five.

I agree with you that the original purpose of life is to reproduce but I don't think that purpose has much meaning any more, considering humans are in abundance, dominating the planet.

So, it stands to reason that the secondary purpose of life is to survive. Pretty easy to do in a first world country when you are not hunting and living in the wild etc.

So, I guess nowadays, the only reason to live is up to subjective opinion.
