People have a superficial and distorted idea of the term. That it's a bunch of gorillas fighting with sticks. They are so far from reality though, cause they hold the popularised, media-level cosmopolitan understanding of these dynamics. They have no idea in a few words. To give a summary.
alpha wins power with good emotions, beta with shaming, guilt and scheming. or simply stays at the bottom of society.
alpha is assertive, beta is withering
alpha doesn't care, beta holds back from fear of others' opinion/punishment.
alpha has high eq, beta more like autistic
alpha has timing and adapts like a chameleon, beta deludes himself that a magical unicorn woman will want him without him adating to the situation.
alpha is self assured and assumes attraction and getting laid, beta begs for the chance to occur.
alpha hangs around other alphas and gets what he wants, beta with other betas usually equally losers.
alpha has a social network of studs and willing hot women, beta a game network best case scenario.

alpha is proactive, the one who gives life to the room, beta is re-active and reacts to women's shit tests and the challenges of life in general.

And it can't be hidden it's all in the body language which speaks volumes even about things the person wants to hide. It was so pathetic seeing that guy in work getting so embarassed. some women are exceptionally perceptive one such girl today, touched merely his shopping cart! like the other end of a freaking cart. no direct contanct and this still suprised him. (was probably the closest he ever got with a woman, lol) and she being very perceptive saw through his subcommunications, was weirded out, withdrew her hands immediately and gave him the look. haha, the guy became more red than beet root juice.
