Meaning of, "if you need me, I'm here for you."?

I have a great guy friend that's been giving some signs he likes me as more than just a "friend". He just texted me, "if you need me, I'm here for you." He's never said something in that vein before. Am I reading too much into it? Guys do you say that to all your "girl" friends or just special women in your life?

This probably means that he likes you as more than a friend but respects you enough to take it slow with you until you are comfortable. Generally as a male if I say this to a girl it means I want to get to know her better and to get closer to her for a potential relationship.

The main reason I say this is I (and a lot of guys) have trouble having really good female friends that we are not interested in, mostly because on an emotional level if we aren't compatible I am not interested in you (enough to be this close of a "friend"), and if we are compatible I would probably be interested in more than a friendship.

I split up with a bf once he texted me to say , if i needed him he would be there for me, eventually, when we got back together, i asked him what he meant by it, he said to let me know he cares about me and still wanted to remain part of my life, i think he values your friendship and cares about you, he's letting you know he will always stick around and be part of your life
