My ex started calling me by a pet name all of a sudden. What does it mean?

My ex has been going through some problems in life so he wanted to just be friends with me. So I agreed of course because it was for his health. It's been a month and we're still friends. I recent told him i missed him but he said he doesn't want to commit because he can't handle it right now. Of course it hurts so now I'm trying to move on because it pains me so much. But then just the other day he called me a new cute nickname. It's a simple variation of my name, but still he's never done this before. Also i feel like he's been acting more obnoxious/annoying recently around me. What does it all mean?

Rule #1: Never Deal with ex's. As you can see it causes nothing but more confusion and drama. Cut contact with him.

In my opinion, he's talking to you because he's lonely and doesn't have any other girl to talk to.
