Why do guys crack there knuckles?

I can't seem to figure this one out but I have a friend who is always cracking his knuckles and when I asked him about it he said its something all guys do and when I think about it a lot of guys do crack their knuckle so my question is why?

Not only guys do it. I was cracking my knuckles about 5 seconds before I saw this question.
I honestly do it just because it is an old habit. Once my friend showed me that she can crack her knuckles really loud (I know it sounds a little weird, long story) and since then I was cracking mine, too.

Just cause the pop feels good, though it's more psychological and physical release.

STOP MAKING ME UNCOMFORTABLE! I don't even know why i do it, and now i'm seriously questioning it.

Truthfully, we have no clue at all. Probably just a habit we've picked up from one fighting video too many (for some reason they always crack their knuckles before fighting). I don't know

i dont do this unless im on the train and someone looks at me with a sharp eye. im cracking my knuckles and showing some muscle so he's afraid. usually works lol. bless the sprinting training and weight lifting! :P

for someone who actually does combat say we punch a lot or get hit etc for us it straightens out our bones again i pop my shoulders back fingers hands etc helps them relax when you still have adrenaline pumping but thats just me.

I don't think this is a gender specific thing. Men and women crack their knuckles.

i know girls crack their knuckles too but out of all the people i know its mostly guys who do it and the girls i know that do it, do it way less then the guys

I do it out of anxiety, and it's just become a habit over the years. Some guys do it just because, I've no idea why...
