How do I comfort my crying boyfriend over facetime?

We have been dating for just about a year and today was the first time he has ever cried in front of me. It was about a subject matter that I can't say its okay to him, because its not something that will get better anytime soon (it was a family matter.) He facetimed me and I ended up on the call with him while he cried, I was unable to hug him or console him in any physical way. After about 5 minutes he told me he felt bad and didn't want me to see him like he was, so I told him it was okay, and he left. It would be great to get some tips on what I should have said for future reference.

Update: I talked to him again and it got worse, he is now ever more sad and I'm not sure if he feels bad about crying in front of me or if its just the thing that was originally upsetting him

Just be there to listen when he needs it and ask him how he feels about the fact he cried in front of you if you're worried about it. If he says he's embarrassed then say that you liked the fact that he was comfortable enough with you to cry in front of you and you just wished there was something you could do. Hope everything works out.

really your in a shitty situation. there isn't much you can do at all beyond telling him your there for him. you just gotta stick it out until you can see him and comfort him in person if it's still eating at him
