What does it mean when a stranger (guy) says Hi?

Yesterday at school (college), I was walking to my classroom and past some other rooms, and there was this guy who said Hi and smiled. What does this mean?

Honestly unless he was in a really really good mood. He probably thinks you're pretty or felt the urgency to say hi because you guys met eye contact and isn't it rude to not say hi after that? If the same guy continues to say hi to you or smile at you, aka if you notice him noticing you often he probably likes you.

I can recall a post from a few days ago with a girl saying they always get stares but never someone to actually talk to them and they always try to act like they weren't looking by breaking eye contact ASAP.

Imma say he probably wants to talk to you, in the conventional sense you would say hi back and a conversation would ensue.

Just means he's friendly. But if you want to talk with him, next time you see him stop him and ask for help with something small. If he's interested he'll be happy to help and it will give you two a chance to talk.
