What does it mean when a guy says "hey stranger" to you?

so there is this guy I know and I saw him one sunday and the next week, I saw him and he said hi and gave me kind of a buddy hug and while he did so he said hey stranger even though it hasn't been too long since I saw him last. does that mean something? someone I know said that it meant something, but I question his answer.Thanks

i should also mention that this guy only seems to give me buddy hugs and only when none of our friends are paying attention or around. he doesn't do this otherwise.

i also should have mentioned that the way he said it was almost like he missed me or somewhat in a sad kind of voice.
